I purchased this item in July. I didn't have need for it until August. I unpacked it and attempted to format it - as required by the drive itself. Seemed to work OK even through the format hung for an hour and wouldn't let me restart. Still, I was able to get my files on. Over the weekend, while out of town, I tried to access my files. Nothing. The drive would not mount. I tried several more times. Nothing. A few days later, I tried again. It mounted but then unmounted. Did this a few times to my frustration.
I did some research and found that some people had some success with a utility called Disk Warrior. Cost $100, but WTH, I needed those files for a client. Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive. I kept trying until FINALLY it found the drive and I was able to upload the files to my server. About half way through, the drive crapped out. Tried Disk Warrior again and the 72 hour upload process began. At the end of the upload, I had all my files, but the drive started beeping - which means the power supply is dead. Damn!!!! Wasted money. Such a huge disappointment.
Look up reviews online. You'll see I'm not alone in this. Lacie makes a crap external drive and makes no apologies. Will never buy from them again.

I bought this hard drive to be able to work through firewire with Final Cut Pro. The speed of USB is not enough for video editing; therefore the firewire feature is wonderful. It is worth paying extra for it. The hard drive works perfectly. It is compact and I love it because I take it everywhere without a hassle. I do not really like the color orange for the protective rubber, but if you want you could buy other colors in LaCie's website.
I accidently dropped it once while it was running and it stopped working. Luckily LaCie has great customer service. I gave them a call and they told me to send it to them. They fixed it at no cost and send it back to me. I was really happy.
If you need an external HD that is reliable with media, such as streaming video, editing, or streaming music from iTunes the LaCie HD is perfect! If you just need a HD for storage I would recommend getting a cheaper external HD that just has USB 2.0.

this item was very easy to use and has already travelled around the country with me. It's a great size and very fast.

I am a truck driver, so I am very hard on electronics. I have only had it for a few weeks but it is perfect for backing up my 17" Macbook Pro. I simply plug it in and it does the rest! I just bought another for my mother and her IMac.

I have the 500gb firewire version. The connection on mine isn't very good. If I am working on the table and someone bumps the table, it becomes disconnected and I get that "device removal" warning. Also, it takes a long time to show up on my desktop, once I plug it into the computer. For what I paid, this isn't such a great device. Although it's super fast (why I gave it 2 stars and not one) when it's actually working, I'd stick with the Western Digital Passports.
