disclaimer: this isn't a thorough review; if that is what you seek, look elsewhere, grasshoppa. here i list some tweaks and quibbles.
*the drive works on macs. however, i used my mac's disk utility to format the drive MS-DOS-style, since the drive's primary purpose is to be a media server on my samsung tv. maybe it was already MS-DOS formatted out of the box, but reformatting allowed me quickly to nix the drive's preloaded software, which i don't need.
*i also tried mac-specific formatting. as expected, the samsung tv didn't recognize the drive. machines giving machines the cold shoulder--brutal world, i know.
*at first, i didn't think the drive worked at all. yeah, the drive's power light went on, but my mac wouldn't recognize it--or so i thought. a bit of patience revealed the following: whenever i plug the drive into my 'puter, it takes about a minute or two for the two to sniff each other out and salute each other. even the tv doesn't recognize the drive for at least a minute. my guess is the delay has something to do with the drive's being USB-powered. not that big a deal, since i can always find something else to do with those spare seconds; the wait is a fair trade for not having to deal with a separate power source, though quicker mutual recognition between the devices would have been preferable. seagrape engineers, ya readin' this?
*the drive comes with a stupendously short (~17") USB cable, by which the drive would dangle from the back of my tv; i have to use a stand to keep the drive in a civilized position near the tv's USB port. i have a slightly longer USB cable lying about (the spare cable would have been the ideal length for back-of-the-tv use, since it would allow the drive to lie flat on the console), and for some reason, the longer USB cable is incapable of transmitting data; the tv and the drive just won't enter the friendship pagoda. seagrape engineers, ya still readin'?
*now that i've figured out the drive's idiosyncrasies, i'm quite OK with it. i'll provide an update here if the critter dies early and ignominiously.

I bought this item for my girlfriend. It arrived and I wanted to surprise her by adding a couple of her favorite songs on it. However, I was not able to get it working on my laptop or my desktop. When plugged into the desktop, the drive would not turn on. None of the USB ports worked. When plugged into the laptop, the drive lit up and spun wildly, but would not be recognized. I read other reviews, which stated that you will need a USB Y cable in order to provide enough power to the drive. This makes sense, as many other portable drives ship with a Y cable. The problem is that my girlfriend's laptop has just two USB ports on opposite sides, and one is taken up by the wireless received for her mouse. While I should have thought of this before buying the product, I returned it anyway and will search for other portable disk space solutions for her. I'm not sure whether my drive functioned well or not, as I have not actually test it in its functioning state.

While I haven't yet put this drive through its full paces like my three WD drives, it handled several full image backups with sufficient speed. Bundled software isn't all that useful, but the drive itself gets the job done. Drive design is pretty good, though they could really lose the gloss...its shiny so it can get scratched rather easy. The drive is active light is a bit small and can be overlooked (which isn't that great for those who love to yank their drives out of the usb ports before ejecting). It does have a lanyard attachment hook....which confuses me because you really shouldn't be carrying a platter drive on a string. It is portable, but not flash drive portable. At 640GB (an odd #), it has decent storage for the price - and so far has gotten the job done.

As per my usual expectations of Amazon, everything came on time, protectively packaged, and worked immediately but then I started to panic as I had not checked the format compatibility before my purchase and my MacBook Pro was not recognizing the device. I immediately called Mac to ask them for a solution and they immediately took me through the steps to take care of all that. So yes - once again another winning purchase from Amazon!

I like this product very much. We only need to connect it into the USB port, and that's it. Ready to use!. Zero noise, zero heat, perfect to fast backups. Use the command xcopy of windows, with the correct parameters, and perform an incremental backup.
