Easy to use, just plug and follow the steps. Backed up my daughter's laptop in a matter of minutes and was able to choose the folders I wanted saved. Great for piece of mind, now all her pix and music are backed up in case anything happens to her laptop!

I use this drive only as a backup device for an HP MediaSmart Home Server... as such, I did not install the software that came embedded on the drive because I would have no use for it and it would only take up storage space. So I have no comments on the software; however, the drive itself is exceptionally sleek and rock solid. Just perfect.

WOW...JUST WOW! I purchased this drive after reading all of the reviews and was confident that I was buying the best USB portable HD for the money. This drive was intended to back up my desktop PC data for a clean install of Windows 7. My PC detected it with no problems and data transfer was fast & easy. Yay - good stuff.
BUT, when I went to copy my data back onto my PC, I plugged the drive into the USB port and heard a faint beeping from the drive. Won't recognize the drive at all. I thought maybe it was a Win7 compatibility thing...nope. After checking the Seagate forum and numerous other threads regarding this issue, I tried using a new USB cable...nope. With a little more research and reading regarding this issue, I've found that I'm completely screwed!
Going to call Seagate 1st thing Monday morning to give them an earful. I'm not paying $800-2500 for data recovery for a $100 hard drive designed for back-up, but I have lost some priceles data. Just overwhelmed...steer clear!

OK, so I've just received my drive and am giving the first run through. If you want very basic drag and drop ability (no encryption and will never take the drive anywhere) it works great. However, I started running into issues when I wanted to investigate the encryption. Oops the drive did not install the encryption software and after spending 20 minutes searching the internet I found the right file to install. Oh, by the way it does not come with a manual soft or hard copy. There is an extremely simply sheet for how to connect it to your PC.
The next issue was when I wanted to disconnect the drive. I tried to use Windows USB icon to stop it with but received the following message "Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later.' OK, so I am not transferring any files all other programs are closed and still the same error message. Funny I thought a portable drive should be portable. So after another 20 minutes I still have not found the solution. Seagate talks about ejecting using Ceedo, but this software is not installed, was never on the HD -- wonder if the documentation on Seagate is outdated, either way it doesn't help me or anyone else.

This is my first review on Amazon. I felt compelled to write it to warn others about this hard drive. I purchased it about 6 months ago to use with Time Machine on my iMac. It was easy to set up and performed beautifully. Then out of the blue, the lights at the bottom of the drive started flashing constantly and when I tried to see what was wrong, I found that the drive was totally dead and unusable, taking with it all of my backups.
I looked on the web, checked their website, and found that a lot of others are experiencing this problem as well. It sounds like it's not worth it to try and send the drive back to them, so here I am, out of luck and out the $$ I paid for it. I will NEVER buy another Seagate drive again, that's for sure. Buyer beware on this one!
