I have a few complaints, one is speed. It's simply something this drive does not have. It's taking 40 minutes to copy 3gb from my laptop to the portable drive. I consider that slow.
The usb port is tight, tight. Like, destroy the hard drive plugging it in tight. I can visually see the port pushing into the drive and the tiny usb cable isn't anywhere near being plugged in. I think I will have to keep the cable plugged in all the time to avoid damage. Good thing it's so short. Kind of hurts portability.
Part of the reason I ordered this drive was that the case can be removed and used with a replacement drive if that ever needs to happen. But now I see that the hard drive will likely outlive the case. Maybe my expectations were high. I knew that due to it's small size you'd need to be gentle, but I didn't think plugging it in would be rough on it.
Yeah, it doesn't get hot. That's because it's SO SLOW. The drive will probably last a long time though.
So I have a hard time recommending this, it is decently priced, it is big enough, it does work. But I wouldn't buy it again.
This has nothing to do with the drive and didn't affect my rating, but I ordered it from "JR", and they filled the package with shredded cardboard, or maybe it was saw dust. This dust filled the inside of the hard drive box. So the drive and cable were coated with this saw dust stuff. It also arrived in a smashed, opened box. I was doubting if I actually got a new one, but I'm supposing it is new, a used or returned one would have that USB port destroyed.

I have a bunch of older WD Passports in 250-500Gb size, and liked those very much. With the SE passports having all those issues, I thought WD Elements would be the product to go to.
The 1st generation WD Elements at 500Gb seemed OK, with the standard USB connector. Now, the 2nd generation 1Tb drive has the following issues:
1) connector seems to have been changed just for the sake of it, the older style super popular format was just fine! Why change it ?!?
2) the drive goes to sleep way too fast, when I use the drive with a media player, after a 1 min pause the playback stutters because it seems that the disk already managed to slow down and needs time to start up. There is no way to adjust this, thanks to WD "taking care of the customer".
3) while not relevant to many, the inner drive connector is not a SATA, but something proprietary. So the drive cannot be taken out of the enclosure and used elsewhere.
I liked WD products before, but here the engineers definitely overdid it.

i bought the 1tb elements SE at target today and so far im impressed. the elements SE model of portable hard drive doesn't come with the crappy software Ive heard so much about so that is a plus and its portable with no need for a power cable. it writes at a pretty good speed (more than 60 GB in less than an hour), and it is a great investment to protect all those valuable files on your computer.

I finally decided to be prudent and create a complete data backup of my Macbook Pro's data. I plugged this little guy in and it was recognized immediately. I went into my Disk Utility and set up a single partition as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which went surprisingly fast. Then I set up Time Machine and made my complete backup (about 350GB worth of data) - took a few hours to write all the data. Opened it up and stepped through some of the file structure to confirm integrity of copy and navigation was quick and painless. I ejected the little guy and we're good to go. This unit is very lightweight, but well constructed; and it's small - like put-it-in-your-pocket small. My new little buddy makes me happy!

I'm very happy with this drive. It is minimally styled. So understated it looks timeless, like monolith in "2001: A Space Odyssey". I haven't speed tested it, but it only takes a few minutes to do a full backup. I start backup and forget it for a while anyway, but noticed it is much faster than my old drive. The best feature is that it runs off USB power. No power brick and cord to drag around. I thought limited power would make it slow, but no so much.
