I've been using this to back up my Mac for about six months and have never had a problem. It's ready to go seconds after I plug it into the computer, and the 800 Fire Wire is lightning fast - backups are complete in a matter of minutes. I've also experimented using it as a regular drive to store documents, photos etc., and the performance was great. If you're looking for something cheaper than AirPort, look no further!

"This drive has me seeing red" 2010-07-24
By M. Rossmore (North Miami Beach, FL United States)
I purchased this 500GB drive from one of the big box stores. I was looking for the fastest portable drive available, as I was intending to use it with a video project. While there were several other less-expensive USB 2.0 drives there, this was the only one that had Firewire as well.

I intended to use the drive with both a Vista and an XP machine. The drive is preset for Mac, and the manual explains how to do a reformat to make it work with Windows. I did that via USB 2.0 and it worked just fine.

Unfortunately, that was the last thing that worked as planned with this drive.

Three MAJOR issues have cropped up:

1) Firewire doesn't work at all. I have both a 4-pin-to-6-pin Firewire 400 cable for my laptop and the standard 6-pin-to-6-pin Firewire 400 for my desktop. Not once has the drive connected via FW on either machine, in either Vista or XP. That's right: the very reason I spent more money on this drive (increased data transfer speed through FW) doesn't work at all.

According to the manual, you have to have one of the USB leads connected to provide power. It says the one marked with the "lightning bolt" symbol but on mine neither one has that symbol. It doesn't matter. I've alternated between the two USB leads and Firewire still doesn't work.

So, I've been forced to resort to using straight up USB, which leads me to issue #2....

2) When I connect the drive via USB 2.0, it worked fine... until I needed to disconnect it. I cannot unmount the drive if it has been used at all after I connected it. I can save all my documents, close all my apps, clear my clipboard, and even then it will continue to say "The device 'Ext Hard Disk USB Device' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later." This is exasperating, as I need to shut down my computer every time I want to remove the drive. Considering how much I move about and go between desktop to laptop and vice versa, this gets old really quickly. This takes me back to the old SCSI drive days, memories which I'd hoped never to revisit after the invention of Firewire and USB.

3) And now the most aggravating issue of all.... This week I have started getting repeated delayed write failure errors. The drive will apparently unmount itself at will, usually when I have several files open, forcing me to hastily save those files all over my main hard drive. I've had two Flash source files corrupted so far, so now this drive has graduated from causing me mere frustration to actually costing time and money in redoing lost work.

Now, I'm handy with computers. I've built my own systems, done my share of tweaking. I actually bought the eGo to replace a small 80GB 2.5" drive that I'd assembled in an $8 USB 2.0 enclosure. That drive rarely had any issues disconnecting, barring open files or a really, really heavy usage session. I'd used that 80GB continuously for music and video production for going on 2 years until I just ran out of space.

The worst part is that because I was in a hurry to do this video project, I've filled this Ego drive with lots of data that I can no longer offload because I don't have the space on any of my other drives. And, the very reason I bought this drive over other, less expensive models - Firewire and the speed it offers - is not working. And, to pour vinegar on the open wound, the bloody thing is screwing up my work.

Avoid this drive. Run away from it. Maybe others have had good experiences, but this has been the single worst hardware purchase I've made in a decade.

"Quieter than most others, @ gud price!" 2010-07-19
By Roy Wiegmann (Dallas, TX)
With really high speeds of firewire 800, multiple interface facility and a three-year warranty, I find model 34629 to be a great buy. I have a Mac for which this gels quite smooth. Pricing is also on a better range. More quiter than most other hard drives.
