"Seems reliable, takes abuse, spin up is annoying." 2010-09-03
By L. Quigley (NYC)
I have two of these now. Both seem to handle a huge amount of data transfer every week very well. I use them with OS X. I have had days in a row where lots of data is being transferred between the computer and the drives, and between the drives themselves all at once. On those days I am very impressed with the drives.

A concern for me is that the drives always take a while to spin up when they are called upon - for example, when I am prompted to upload a file, my system basically freezes until the drives spin up into action - and there are times when they make all the right noises but don't fully complete the process. Then I have to unplug the cable so I can continue my hardcore computing.

The case on one of them doesn't seem like it was put on properly.

Lacie customer service is excellent.

"died and took a year of my life down with it" 2010-08-18
By Wicked J (wi)
I was soooooo happy with this product.... for a little over a year. I filled it with tons of stuff: movies, music, pictures, backup of the contents of my entire laptop, etc. And then it just up and died, taking a year's worth of data with it. How can I go back to a product meant for backing up data when it isn't built to last?

"Piece of crap cable, piece of crap customer service" 2010-08-08
By D. nichols (Texas)
This piece of Donkey *#&( has a flimsy USB<>Firewire cable that consistently loses connection with my computers, even sitting completely still. I don't have to move it, adjust it, or even walk hard on the ground. It just randomly disconnects! And this happened while I was watching a movie, now my entire 750GB of movies that I spent countless hours transferring from DVD to HD is now completely missing. WHAT THE EFF!!! this thing is such a piece of crap. And the best part, I threw away all my DVD's because I was going military deployment and moving shortly after I came back from the desert. Lesson learned, always keep a backup of your backups! But still, this thing is a giant piece of crap.

I politely contacted customer service, thinking there might be a recovery option. They forwarded me information to contact a recover service that costs $thousands$ to use. Either that or attempt a "disk first aid" recovery, which requires me to buy another hard drive and transfer.

Customer service is useless. This hard drive is now a shiny paperweight. Thanks LaCie, for a worthless piece of crap.

 "Bitter lemon" 2010-07-28
By K. Jamison (Co. Down, United Kingdom)
I was dumb.

I was burned (not literally) by a LaCie product years ago and I chose to purchase another one all these years later. Hey, isn't everyone entitled to the benefit of the doubt?

I am still dumb.

I deserve what I got.

Slow, intermittent and unreliable. Why did I buy a 1TB drive when a perfectly good 500GB from Seagate or WD would have been perfect. Four months and counting.

I went for looks.

It has a 'monolithic' quality, like the Tycho Magnetic Anomaly from 2001:A Space Odyssey.

When I try to access the drive, I expect to get the message, "I'm sorry, Dave, I cannot let you do that." except I don't get that message. Accessing the drive, trying to run antivirus on it or even just trying the defrag program causes the computer to crash (WinXP SP3).

As a paperweight, it is perfect.

 "Fast and Easy" 2010-07-12
By H. Policarpio (Hawaii)
I use firewire on this LACIE 1TB product and it typically takes up to 3 min. to transfer an 8GB movie onto my Macbook Pro and when I USB, it takes up to 5 mins.-so I'm pretty impressed with its speed and ease of just click and dragging files for transfer while multi-tasking on my laptop. And even after the fact that I've taken this on my military deployments and it has taken a little beating in my check-in luggage, it has proven its durability and I continue to depend on it for my movies and music. Definitely recommend!
