This is a good portable drive. Works fairly fast. Pretty reliable. But it gets warm really fast. You can put a piece of toast on it to keep it warm. It's bulkier than other portable drives. Nice that it has multiple connections. USB and firewire.

I have been using this drive as my main photo storage drive and it travels with me to workshops and on trips. So far it has not failed. But I have been worried as this drive is extremely hot and stays hot as long as it is connected to the computer. As I write this review, I am backing up this drive to a new Western Digital 500 GB passport. Both drives have been on for the same length of time and the Lacie is very hot and the WD is not. The backup process has been very slow as I have a lot of data. The WD is smaller and while it does not have the orange protection, I bought a nice neat protective pouch for it. It will probably become my travel drive of choice.

This works like a champ on my Mac. But it doesn't show up on my PC. Then when you supply power to it through the supplied usb power adapter it whines and whinnies like a horse. It still fails to show. The Lacie site provides a solution instantly - buy a 19.95 power adapter. Ugh. So this was the first Lacie I purchased in five years after a bad experience with three Lacie drives for our business. I guess I got the arsenic with the old Lacie.

I purchased this item in July. I didn't have need for it until August. I unpacked it and attempted to format it - as required by the drive itself. Seemed to work OK even through the format hung for an hour and wouldn't let me restart. Still, I was able to get my files on. Over the weekend, while out of town, I tried to access my files. Nothing. The drive would not mount. I tried several more times. Nothing. A few days later, I tried again. It mounted but then unmounted. Did this a few times to my frustration.
I did some research and found that some people had some success with a utility called Disk Warrior. Cost $100, but WTH, I needed those files for a client. Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive. I kept trying until FINALLY it found the drive and I was able to upload the files to my server. About half way through, the drive crapped out. Tried Disk Warrior again and the 72 hour upload process began. At the end of the upload, I had all my files, but the drive started beeping - which means the power supply is dead. Damn!!!! Wasted money. Such a huge disappointment.
Look up reviews online. You'll see I'm not alone in this. Lacie makes a crap external drive and makes no apologies. Will never buy from them again.
