"Fast, Sturdy, and Does the Job" 2010-09-06
By Al C.
I have owned this for about 4 months and I believe that it's great. I have tested it on both a Mac and Windows computer and it performs well on either computer.

Here's what I love about this hard drive:

-7200 rpm: This is how fast the drive spins. The 7200 rmp allows faster copying and writing to the drive and to your computer. See Speed Tests below.

-FireWire 800, FireWire 400, USB 2.0: These are all the ways you can connect the hard dive to your computer. I can connect the hard drive to my PC with the included USB 2.0 cable and when I need to use it on my Mac, I can either plug it into the Mac with the same USB cable or just switch to using a FireWire 800 if I want faster copying/writing to the drive.

-No power cord needed: The drive gets its power from your computer when you connect it with one of the cables. If you have an older computer, LaCie does include an extra USB cord that provides power to the drive. You just plug in the extra USB to power the drive and another cable (USB or FireWire) to your computer.

-Portable: This drive is small enough to carry in a purse or briefcase and doesn't take much space. It's also very light!

Speed Tests:

USB 2.0 - Copying a 1 GB file from PC to LaCie takes about 50 seconds. Copying a 1 GB file from LaCie to PC takes about 45 seconds.

FireWire 400 - Copying a 1 GB file from PC to LaCie takes about 29 seconds. Copying a 1 GB file from LaCie to PC takes about 25 seconds.

FireWire 800 - Copying a 1 GB file from PC to LaCie takes about 20 seconds. Copying a 1 GB file from LaCie to PC takes about 17 seconds.

In response to reviews that say the drive has failed, I have not have my drive fail at all.

"Great drive, comes with all needed cables" 2010-09-01
By Scott Plumlee
Very nice looking, runs fast. It's not clear from the description but you do NOT need to order cables. It comes with a USB power sharing cord, a Firewire 400, a Firewire 800, and a UCD 2.0 cable. I'm very pleased with this purchase. I use it on a mac and did have to reformat the drive (versus running their software) but what a great piece of hardware.

"Great for portable video editing" 2010-08-23
By C. Thomas (Boston)

The fact that you can get this with a FW800 port and a 7200 RPM drive gives it a big advantage over other external drives.

Sure it looks butt ugly and the bright orange color is a little distracting but it works and that's what I need when editing video in the field. Actually wish they offered a 1GB version.

Need to be careful with the ports though, accidentally worked my FW800 port loose. But I used the Lacie online automated tech support forms and I had a replacement drive in a few days. My experience indicated that it is not as rugged as they might want you to believe but it should survive moderate abuse in the field.

"Almost Lost 900 Photos - Drive Stopped Working After 2 Weeks" 2010-08-09
By P. Hanson (Seattle, WA USA)
I totally get it... sometimes technology fails. But you know... when the technology that fails just happens to be the first and only LaCie drive I've ever bought, it also makes it the last LaCie drive I'll ever buy. I'm a photographer and have used Western Digital external drives the last few years for my photos. I have never had a problem with them. But everyone kept telling me LaCie is better, faster... etc. so I bought one. I'd been using it for about two weeks when I had a weekend where I took about 11,000 photos. The drive failed in the middle of the weekend (it fails to boot, I can hear the drive "clicking" inside like it's stuck and making a faint beeping sound), trapping 900 of my photos on it! I was up half the night desperate to pull them off and eventually was able to by sheer luck. When I went back to clear off the drive to return it, I wasn't even able to access the files anymore.

I know a lot of people who love LaCie, but as my luck went, I'm just not one of those people! So I'm going back to what works for me... which happens to be Western Digital drives.

 "All in One" 2010-06-24
By Michael Pullano
I bought this because I'm often traveling and I do a lot of Video and Photography work. Having the fast 7200rpm harddrive is great because I don't have to worry about dropped frames or slow down. Not to mention it has a large storage capacity and is more durable than any other external I've come across.

Throw in the fact that it has USB 2, Firewire 400 & 800 you can ask for a more versatile portable harddrive.

Perfect for the traveling, creative types.
