 "My Book" 2010-08-31

This is an excellent product for the money. It expanded my Tivo memory by 10x It operates flawlessly. My only complaint is the size If it were based on a 2.5" harddrive platform and not a 3.5" it would be smaller and therefore perfect.

 "Works like a charm" 2010-08-31
By Dino (California)
I have a Tivo HD and this summer especially after a one week vacation, was quickly running out of space and resulting in our favorite shows either not being recorded or oldest ones deleted. I did a lot of search and ended up with this unit which I believe is the only one certified by Tivo (I checked with Tivo Support). The installation, although you must carefully follow instructions, was real easy and it took a total of maybe 15 minutes. Powered up the Tivo unit, followed instruction and Tivo recognized and configured it. Ever since then, the only reason I even know I have an extra device in my ET cabinet, is that all my shows are being recorded (there are ~200 shows in my Tivo Suggestion folder now vs. 0 before adding this expander) and don't have to worry about anything being deleted before we have a chance to watch them. Noise level is very low and Tivo menu performance seems unchanged. I highly recommend this if Tivo's standard storage is not enough.

 "Works Perfectly" 2010-08-27
By David Mays (Palmyra, NJ)
This couldn't be much easier. You just plug it into your Tivo, reboot, follow the instructions. My Tivo HD shows 156 hours of HD recording capacity now, which is pretty darn great.

The drive DOES come with an eSata cable, so don't bother ordering one with it. I was fooled by the misleading page here, but luckily the goofy shipping that Amazon does allowed me to cancel the cable after I got the drive, because the cable hadn't shipped yet.

 "Works GREAT with DirecTV!" 2010-08-18
By M. Wilhelm (St Louis, MO)
If you LOVE television but you don't have enough time each day to keep up with your favorite shows (and I have about 20 of them) then this is the device for you! This is SO easy to setup you simply pull it out of the box and hook it up to your DVR with the provided eSATA cable and you are set! Actually it took about 20 minutes because my receiver had to reset but all in all an easy setup.

The ONLY criticism I could give is that I was unaware you would have to setup all your Series Recordings again but that's a small price to pay when you're adding three times (or more) recording capacity to your DVR. You CAN unhook the My DVR Expander and get back to your old recordings. I have yet to try this because I'm too busy filling this thing up with shows and movies :-) but I've read plenty of articles that says you can do this.

For the record I am using this with a DirecTV HR21-200 HD+DVR.

"Works with Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR with Passport Echo IPG software" 2010-08-15
By Love My Kindle (San Diego, CA USA)
I have had this expander up and running for 2 days. So far, so good. The only thing I can't really comment on yet is its reliability. I'll try to remember to post again after I've had it running a month or so. I gave a low star rating for ease of installation only because of the provided installation instructions. This is a long post because there has been a lot of chatter recently about problems expanding the recording capacity of Scientific Atlanta HDTV Explorer 8300HD running Passport Echo IPG software with an eSATA external drive.

Expanding Scientific Atlanta (SA) 8300HD DVR is a hot issue and the solution is one I have spent days searching through many forums for. My hubby and I had a TiVo for many years until we decided to switch to a bundled cable service (HDTV, internet, phone) through COX San Diego South. It really never occurred to us that our new (refurbished actually) SA cable box would come with a meager 160GB drive (at least TiVo came with 500GB--and it was several years old). With so many HD channels available now 160GB is totally unacceptable--even 500GB is a pain to manage.

When searching for a compatible expander for our SA, I ran across another Amazon review (read "Worked Great with Cablevision Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. DON'T FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS!!" by georgeoc). Before purchasing the drive, however, I decided to contact Western Digital and ask about compatibility. Their website states our SA is compatible with the 500GB drive only, but I thought I'd ask about the 1GB version. Their response was, contact your service provider. SO, I contacted COX San Diego South. Their response was contact the expander drive vendor. I don't think COX was prepared for any questions about connecting an expander drive because they just switched all of their customers over to a new Interactive Program Guide (IPG) a few months ago. They previous used Passport SARA, and now use Passport ECHO. Some forums suggest that Passport ECHO will not recognize expander drives, some suggest it will, but only 500GB drives. Some suggest that customers that have an expander drive connected to a SA 8300HD DVR running the new (required) Passport ECHO software will no longer be able to retrieve and/or record to it.

SO, we decided to take a chance and go ahead an order this expander drive. We received it in 2 days (THANKS Amazon!). We followed the installation instructions and here is what we found:

Our SA did not recognize the drive. Not only that, we could not view any live channels, or the shows previously recorded. SO, we took advice of another reviewer (read "Worked Great with Cablevision Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. DON'T FOLLOW THEIR DIRECTIONS!!" by georgeoc) and VOILA, it works! Here are the steps we followed -- results included.

1. Check the recording space available on the SA 8300HD. Our box uses Passport ECHO software and a COX Digital DVR M7920 remote

a. Press "DVR List" button

b. Press "A Saved Shows" button

c. Use up/down arrow keys to highlight "View Disk Info..."; press "Select" button

d. Note the percentage of "Estimated free space ..." (on our box it was 71% since we had only recorded a few shows)

*2. Power off the SA DVR and disconnect its power cord.

3. Connect the AC adapter cord to the DVR Expander and electric outlet. The power LED should illuminate.

*4. Connect the SA DVR power cord to the electrical outlet. Wait until the time is displayed on the box indicating the unit is booted and ready to be turned on.

*5. Power the SA DVR on. Verify you can view cable channels.

7. Connect the eSata cable to the DVR Expander, then to the SA DVR.

8. Follow the SA DVR instructions to format the DVR Expander.

9. When, complete, perform step 1 again. The estimated percentage and free disk space should be considerably higher. (On our box it was 98%, confirming that the SA had formatted and could see the drive)

*I'm pretty sure that these steps are not needed if your SA DVR box is already plugged in, powered on, and you are viewing your cable channels. We'll find our for sure when we order and install another of these expander drives on our bedroom SA box.

The above steps make sense to me because the IPG software needs to be running in order to detect that a new external device has been plugged in -- just like a computer, it should be like a plug-n-play device.

Sorry for the long review, but I am compelled to put this information out there for all of the users who aren't adventurous enough to ignore the expander drive installation instructions. I'm going to post another review on Amazon containing the same into and also post this information on a few forums. I also plan to send this information to Western Digital and COX, hoping that they will run a fews tests and provide compatibility guides to their customers.

We got our drive up and running in about 5 minutes, and that includes following the instructions provided with the drive.
