"A FIX FOR THE "CLICK OF DEATH"" 2010-09-10
By C. Corbett
I bought this drive yesterday at an EXTREMELY discounted price from a local Wal*Mart. It was $60, brand new. I brought it home, and so far everything works just fine after a quick reformat and transferring about 500GB of data to it. Because of how smoothly everything has been going, I decided to go online and figure out what the "catch" is. I came here to Amazon first because of the excellent product reviews, and TADA! Over a hundred one-star reviews with about 90% of them being the same problem: FAILURE and LOSS OF DATA! So THAT'S why it's so cheap!

Well, not wanting to return it due to the hassle involved of backing up data that I just backed up, I decided to look FURTHER to see if there were any fixes or workarounds. There are two that I came across:

1. Try replacing the USB cable with another one with a FERRITE BEAD. For those of you who don't know, it's that cylindrical plastic thing on the ends of some USB cords, and some camera A/V cords. The PS3 controller comes with one, for example. This works because the poorly-made enclosure can suffer from interference. (One user actually moved his drive to a different part of his house away from other electronic devices, and the clicking stopped just from that!) This has fixed MANY of these drives that otherwise would suffer from severe clicking or being unreadable.

2. Try taking out the hard drive itself from the enclosure. This one obviously is a last resort, and only for those tech-savvy enough to attempt it. PLUS--it WILL VOID ANY WARRANTY. Google or youtube for a how-to, but you basically just pry off the top. Apparently the main issue is with the cheap (yet pretty!) enclosure, not the drive itself. If you have another enclosure that can handle the SATA drive, this should resolve the issue.

Now the only problem is if the clicking has been happening for so long that the bad enclosure has actually damaged your drive (which is possible). If that's the case, neither of these methods will work.

I have switched to a ferrite beaded USB cable, and so far still no problems (although it has just been one day...). If this works for anyone else, please comment and let it be heard! I do not suggest purchasing this product, unless you're like me and want something cheap due to "some assembly (fixing) required", but for those who already have one and want their data back--this could be a lifesaver!

"Solid hard drive - own several" 2010-09-07
By J. Westbrook (San Francisco, CA USA)
I have two of these drives at home and have purchased another two for use at work (I'm an IT consultant). They are well made and reliable. So far, much more reliable than the Western Digital drives I have purchased. This is a very nice looking unit, but I think it could be a bit smaller.

The only other complaint I have is that they start to spin up when you plug them in. An on/off switch would be a nice feature as they do emit a little bit of noise. Two of them sitting on my wooden desk create a little bit of a hum that I could do without when I'm not using them.

All in all, very good units that I would (and have) recommend to friends.

"Good product., stop misinformation on Warranty!! It is 5 years!" 2010-09-04
By Alex G (Nashville, Tennessee USA)
So far as I can tell, this is a good hard drive. SPacious, good looking, and backed by an excellent 5 years warranty. Where people are getting this 2 year warranty routine, I do not know, but it is incorrect.

First thing I did after setting this drive up, was set up a 6 hour long backup of my C: drive which it handled well, with no problems. Setup was easy and not complicated. I also did 70 gigs worth of other backups while the system mirror/backup was running, and it handled both capably with no issues.

I got this at a big box electronics store at a bargain price.

I have three other Seagate drives that have lasted anywhere between two and 5 years with no problems whatsoever. I even dropped one of the 500 gig Seagates onto the floor while it was running and it countinued to function without a problem. I cannot say the same about the WD and Maxtor drives I used prior to converting to Seagate; the Maxtor and WD drives failed continually about a year into service each time. A one year lifespan at this price point is unacceptable, while a 3-5 year lifespan is what I call a good deal.

I recommend the Free Agent 1 TB Seagate drive.

 "Seagate FreeAgent" 2010-09-01
By Diana Zeeryp (Traverse City, MI)
This product not only was noisy during backup, within the first 6 months of use it failed on me, permanently. It was easy to set up and use, but for the most part anything that lasts only 6 monts (especially when it was over $100) doesn't merit a passing thought. I would not recommend this product.

"Failure after 1 day, 2GB Seagate External" 2010-09-01
By Richard Chase
I don't know about you, but I intended to store my data longer than one day. I was in the middle of recovering personal and valuable data from another failing disk (but it had a long lifetime) when the brand-new 2GB Seagate drive failed. I ended up losing all my data, and since the data I had written to the defective disk was personal, it is a total loss -- I can't even send the disk back for a refund. This level of quality assurance is criminal (just look at the hundreds of negative reports here on Amazon).
