 "Excellent External Hard Drive" 2010-08-25
By Dex
After I bought a new MacBook Pro with a bigger hard drive, my old 250 gig Apricorn drive was too small and needed replacing. I was hesitant to switch brands, but the Seagate won me over with its aluminum exterior. I love that its powered by the USB connection and works flawlessly with Apple's Time Machine. It looks like it was custom made for my MacBook Pro.

One thing that put my mind at ease, was the USB cord was not permanently connected to the hard drive like the Apricorn was. I was always paranoid that the cord would get pinched or cut and I would lose the functionality as well as the contents of my entire back up drive. The Seagate gives you the option of using the small cord it comes with or replacing it with another if needed.

Great product!

 "sweet and simple" 2010-08-24

I have a mac, and I wanted a portable external hard drive.

I chose the Seagate over my passport because its simple.

It works just like a USB stick would with no fancy software on it,

very simple and easy to use.

 "Seagate ease" 2010-07-10
By Bucktown Bill
After researching many backup hard-drives for my iMac G5, I decided that this Seagate unit was very well priced for what it provided. Unfortunately though, when I first hooked it up and tried to download the entire contents of my hard-drive, nothing would work. There were virtually no helpful directions and no manual came with the unit. When I tried to talk to Seagate's technical support, they were of no use whatsoever. In fact, they told me I needed to purchase additional software to make the unit work but couldn't tell me what specifically that software was or where to purchase it. They were totally useless so don't bother to call them. The Seagate website was next to be tried. As usual, most of the information concerned PCs, not Macs, even though the unit I purchased was specifically designed to work with a Mac. The pages and pages of information on the website was very, very technical and did not help in the least. So I did what I usually do when I have a problem with my system. I contacted the "Genius Bar" people at my local Apple Store. The next day I brought my computer and the Seagate backup unit to the Apple Store and they quickly diagnosed what needed to be done. My G5 was running an old Tiger operating system and the Apple people thought it would help to upgade this to their Leopard OS, which they did right in the store, AT NO CHARGE, even though I did not have a current support contract for my machine. This was simply amazing and since Leopard contains an application called "Time Machine", the Seagate unit recognized that and immediately connected and allowed for my HD contents to be copied. The actual copying of about 150 GB was then done at home using a USB cable and that took quite a few hours but that was ok with me so long as there were no qlitches and there weren't. Now, with "Time Machine", the Seagate unit is set to cycle through whatever I have recently done on my computer, every week or so, and copy only the new data. This was very important otherwise I'd have to do so manually and copy EVERYTHING as if I were just starting. That would have been a nightmare and totally unacceptable. So, if you own an older Mac, and want to use this Seagate unit, be sure to talk to your local Apple people to make it work smoothly. After all the above, I am now extremely happy with this unit, though it was a bit unnerving at the start.

 "A bit quirky" 2010-07-05
By M. Homburg (Akron, Ohio)
Received in a few days after order, plugged in, no problem with drivers, but it would stop mid way and say it was improperly ejected. This went on for about a week , and after-wards has been working great. Not sure why it did what it did, but still a great little drive.
