I had a Western Digital external hard drive. Worked "decently" (using the term loosely) for about a year, then stopped working all together. I could not do anything, because it would not work at all... it just died. I contacted WD be email and phone, but they (WD)refused to do anything about this issue. When I purchase my next external hard drive, it will be from another company.

1. I've used various external HD over the years (Lacie, Western Digital, Seagate, OWC etc...). I've used the WD Passport series before and thus have "faith" in their general reliability (note: if you expect / demand that HD will never fail--> you're going to be dissapointed because it doesn't match reality). Thus, I know that these drives are well made, work well and are nicely designed etc...
2. When I received this unit, I was very surprised with how WD has redesigned the unit to make it smaller, sleeker--> all in all and excellent USB powered drive. Furthermore, unlike the prior versions of the passport series, this unit now comes with "software" that is somehow integrated into the hardware (i'm not an engineer, but the bottomline is that the software is NOT independent from the harddrive; it's like "baked" into the drive)--> this I view as a very good thing because it makes the security aspect of the drive very streamlined. i'm really not explaining this software that well, but the bottomline is that it is fussfree in terms of set up and use. It allows you to password protect the harddrive (if so desired) and it also allows for various types of automatic backup (if so desired).
3. All in all, an excellent bus powered harddrive. You can't go wrong with the WD Passport series. I love the Seagate drives as well, however the WD "baked in" software suite really puts them ahead of Seagate... for now. But in terms of the actual drives, both are excellent products. Well done.

i have both WD my passports one for Mac and one for PC... this one for Mac is more robust than the one for PC... don't know if it's WD to blame or Windows.

I received this hard drive in January. It was a gift. I did not have any of the problems using the Passport that are discussed in other reviews. I moved my entire iTunes music libary to the Passport because it was taking up too much space on my computer's internal hard drive. Everything was working great . . . for awhile. After about three months the Passport failed. I was not able to recover the tracks on the Passport. I could restore music that I had on my iPod, but the tracks that I did not have on my iPod are lost. I cannot recommend this product. You'll need to buy another external hard drive to back up the Passport. It just isn't reliable.
