I generally like the unit, however, my biggest gripe is that I cannot for the life of me get the eSATA connection to work which was a main selling point for me. This might be more my motherboard's controller's fault but I am not sure. If your motherboard uses a JMICRON controller for the external sata this unit may not be for you...of course I can't guarantee that. Otherwise, I think the unit is OK. I'm fairly tech savvy as I build my own PC's but I still don't think I am off-base when saying set-up (except for eSATA) is pretty simple. The backup software is OK as well but I don't really have anything to compare it to.

The subject line sums it up. I did see some reviewers complain about noise and others mentioned it was not noisy. Both are true. Here's the problem though. Once you use the drive and it gets warmed up, the fan volume really goes up. This may be a great and reliable drive, but not for home office use and belongs in an IT closet. Returning it back.
Customer service is good, but the fact I had to call them in a way is bad. One of the rubber feet at the bottom was missing. It's really a sloppy job. They are like 0.1 inch wide and 1/2 inch long so even if they don't get dropped during packing etc, you are bound to get them off if the drive is moved around with the end result that it will become wobbly.
Great looks though!

When I received the Lacie 2Big Quadra I was pretty excited to get it installed. Unfortunately, the installation manual is virtually useless and the software is outdated and poor. To reformat the drives you are to use the Setup Assistant software that is nowhere to be found on the disc I was provided. After a bit of work searching a few forums (which should not have been needed) I finally finished the installation. After all of that work I realized after a very brief period of use that this thing is far to loud. If you've owned the first generation PS3 you will have an idea of how loud it is. If you are within a few feet of it you will likely be annoyed. I uninstalled the software, boxed it up, and shipped it back. I'll stick to WD and Seagate.

All hard drives are a roll of the dice. I wanted to buy a mirror box because I'm paranoid, and I had heard that there was an increased risk of double failure with pre-rolled boxes like this (and my earlier RAID box). I didn't want to save a few $$$ by rolling my own RAID box because I have neither the time nor the technical expertise. I also didn't want to go with a Drobo because A) it's a lot of money to spend and to have to buy additional drives, and B) there's still a risk of single point failure in the Drobo itself. In the end, I went with LaCie because of what I perceived as a reputation for better boxes with more reliable drives, spent the premium, crossed my fingers, kept the packaging, and hoped for the best.
Four months later, I've exhaled and tossed the packaging. The drive is sturdy, rock solid, plays well with my computers, and is actually not as loud as some reviews I've read seem to suggest!

No support yet for the Button for Windows. An annoyance, since Windows sees it and tries to install the driver. Took a while to get Windows to ignore it. Otherwise, the Lacie is working ok.
